Job description

The Lead Electrical Engineer serves as the primary technical resource and electrical discipline lead for electrical systems associated with the company's projects and equipment offerings. The position is responsible for managing outsourced electrical engineering activities, supporting procurement of electrical equipment and material, and serving as the technical interface between customers, architect-engineers (A/E), engineering service providers, equipment suppliers, Supply Chain Management, and internal stakeholders.

The individual serves as the organization's electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership, guidance, and oversight for the electrical scope of work throughout the project lifecycle.

As the electrical discipline lead, the individual is responsible for planning, coordinating, and driving execution of the electrical scope from proposal development through project closeout. This includes leadership of subcontract engineering activities, management of supplier interfaces, resolution of technical issues, coordination of project stakeholders, and ensuring electrical deliverables support overall project cost, schedule, quality, and performance objectives.

The role also provides support for instrumentation and controls engineering activities as workload permits.

Primary Responsibilities Include
  • Serve as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for electrical power systems, motors, VFDs, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, generators, grounding systems, electrical protection systems, and associated electrical equipment.
  • Develop, review, and approve electrical specifications, equipment requisitions, datasheets, load lists, control panel designs, and other electrical engineering deliverables required for proposals and projects.
  • Define, manage, and oversee subcontracted electrical engineering services, including scope development, deliverable requirements, schedule coordination, technical reviews, and compliance with project requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards.
  • Act as the primary technical interface between customers, architect-engineers (A/E), subcontract engineering firms, equipment suppliers, Supply Chain Management (SCM), and internal project stakeholders to ensure alignment of technical requirements throughout project execution.
  • Support proposal development activities through electrical scope definition, execution planning, equipment selection, cost estimating, budget development, technical risk evaluation, and preparation of Electrical Material Take-Offs (MTOs) for major equipment and bulk electrical materials.
  • Lead the technical procurement process for electrical equipment and systems by supporting supplier prequalification, bid evaluations, technical clarifications, supplier selection, and review of supplier documentation.
  • Manage electrical equipment and subcontractor performance throughout project execution, including technical coordination, schedule tracking, documentation management, stakeholder communication, risk mitigation, cost control, and change management.
  • Participate in and oversee Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), equipment inspections, commissioning activities, startup support, troubleshooting, and field service activities as required. Domestic and international travel may be required to support customer meetings, FATs, site commissioning, startup, and issue resolution activities.
  • Provide general technical leadership and support across the organization while contributing to continuous improvement, lessons learned, and development of electrical engineering standards and best practices.

When primary electrical engineering responsibilities permit, provide support for instrumentation and controls engineering activities, including:

  • Assisting with the development of Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), I/O Lists, Instrument Lists, and Electrical Load Lists.
  • Developing instrumentation deliverables such as datasheets, location drawings, installation details, and technical specifications.
  • Supporting controls engineering activities including development of control narratives, functional logic diagrams, and cause-and-effect diagrams.
  • Evaluating vendor quotations, preparing technical bid evaluations, and supporting procurement of instrumentation and control systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of electrical engineering experience in industrial, power generation, or related industries.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical power distribution systems, motors, VFDs, MCCs, switchgear, transformers, generators, grounding systems, electrical protection systems, power system analysis, hazardous area classification, electrical equipment and material selection, and arc flash analysis.
  • Experience managing electrical equipment suppliers, engineering service providers, and technical procurement activities.
  • Experience developing specifications, evaluating vendor proposals, and reviewing engineering deliverables.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience with codes and standards such as NFPA, API, IEEE, NEMA, and IEC.
  • Experience developing electrical cost estimates and Electrical Material Take-Offs (MTOs).
  • Experience supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, and field startup activities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally to support customer meetings, Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and other project execution activities.
