We are representing a Houston-based energy infrastructure company seeking a Lead Electrical Applications Engineer to lead the technical development of customer-facing power solutions.
About the Role
The role sits at the intersection of electrical power systems, distributed generation, switchgear, transformers, and customer solution development. This is not a back-office design role. The person hired will work directly with customers to understand electrical requirements, identify constraints, develop system architectures, explain design tradeoffs, and translate those requirements into technically executable solutions. This is a senior individual-contributor position. The engineer will lead major technical opportunities and customer discussions but will not initially have direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Lead development of distributed generation and solutions for customer opportunities, including system architecture, equipment sizing, and technical scope.
- Develop and review electrical designs, single-line diagrams, system layouts, and low- and medium-voltage configurations.
- Apply working knowledge of switchgear, transformers, generation, electrical distribution, and interconnection systems.
- Evaluate load, capacity, redundancy, reliability, cost, constructability, and schedule when making system-level design decisions.
- Serve as a primary technical interface with customers through discovery meetings, whiteboarding sessions, presentations, technical reviews, and site visits.
- Determine the underlying electrical requirement when a customer’s initial request does not fully define the problem.
- Lead technical responses to RFPs and specification packages, including compliance matrices, technical narratives, exceptions, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate technical input from engineering, EPC, R&D, product, commercial, and other subject-matter experts.
- Lead technical development of large opportunities while reviewing work completed by junior engineers on smaller proposals.
- Advise internal leadership on technical risk, resource requirements, and solution feasibility.
- Support handoff from front-end solution development into detailed engineering and project execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree required.
- 5+ years of professional electrical engineering experience.
Required Skills
- Professional experience with electrical power systems, power generation, or related electrical infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of low- and medium-voltage electrical systems.
- Experience with switchgear, transformers, electrical distribution, generation, or interconnection systems.
- Experience developing, reviewing, or interpreting single-line diagrams and electrical system layouts.
- Ability to translate customer requirements into practical electrical system architecture, equipment requirements, and technical scope.
- Ability to explain complex electrical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical customers.
- Experience leading or supporting customer-facing technical discussions.
- Ability to operate as the technical owner of a project rather than relying on another engineer to lead detailed electrical conversations.
Preferred Skills
- Applications engineering experience with switchgear, transformers, power generation, or electrical distribution equipment.
- Experience with companies operating in the electrical equipment or power systems market.
- Microgrid or distributed energy resource experience.
- Utility interconnection or grid-integration experience.
- Protection, relaying, and system coordination knowledge.
- Power-system studies including load flow, short circuit, or reliability analysis.
- Experience with ETAP, PSCAD, PSS/E, MATLAB/Simulink, AutoCAD, or comparable engineering tools.
- Battery energy storage system exposure.
- Data-center or mission-critical power infrastructure experience.
- Technical proposal, bid, or RFP leadership.
- Experience reviewing large specification packages and developing technical compliance responses.
- Customer-facing applications engineering, sales engineering, or consulting engineering experience.
