Job summary

Sedalia Democrat and Warrensburg Star-Journal are seeking a Managing Editor to lead our editorial department and shape the newsroom’s vision. You will oversee daily operations, ensure accuracy and engaging content for our community, and drive storytelling with journalistic excellence.

You will mentor reporters, manage the workflow from brainstorming to publication, uphold AP Style standards, and collaborate across teams to meet deadlines while maintaining high editorial quality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field (Required).
• At least 2 years of proven experience in editorial management (Required).
• Deep familiarity with AP Style, ethics, and media standards.
• Proficiency with Content Management Systems (CMS) and standard word processing software.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication, sharp proofreading, and ability to work under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and manage the editorial team, actively assigning tasks to writers and editors.
• Oversee the entire content creation workflow, from initial story brainstorming to final publication.
• Uphold top-tier editorial standards, ensuring content adheres to AP Style.
• Conduct rigorous fact-checking, deep research, and final proofreading for all pieces.
• Collaborate with reporters and contributors to develop compelling, informative content.
• Edit and polish copy for clarity, punchiness, accuracy, and structure.
• Coordinate across departments to meet deadlines.
