Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Senior Downstream Bioprocess Engineer to advance scalable purification processes for microbially produced small molecules and metabolites. You will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists from microbiology, metabolic engineering, and chemistry to solve national security challenges.

You will lead experiments, optimize recovery and purification steps, and contribute to project proposals and sponsor relations.

Qualifications

  • PhD required in a relevant field (Chemical/ Biological/ Chemistry).
  • Postdoctoral experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience developing downstream processing methods for microbes producing small molecules or metabolites.
  • Experience applying analytical chemistry methods (HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS).
  • Ability to design, execute, and troubleshoot lab experiments for purification and process optimization.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by publications/presentations.
  • Eligibility to obtain Interim Secret clearance and ultimately TS/SCI; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize downstream processes for recovery and purification of microbially produced small molecules and metabolites.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve process performance and characterize biomanufacturing products using analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop biotechnology solutions for national security applications.
  • Lead technical efforts on funded research projects, including planning, execution, and results communication.
  • Contribute to growth of the research portfolio by developing concepts, writing proposals, and engaging sponsors.
