Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Senior Downstream Bioprocess Engineer to develop scalable purification processes for microbially produced small molecules and metabolites. You will work with microbiologists, metabolic engineers, and chemists on national security biotechnology challenges.

The role emphasizes design of experiments, analytical characterization, and leadership of research projects while building new technical concepts and engaging sponsors.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 1+ year of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience developing downstream processing methods for microbial production of small molecules or metabolites.
  • Experience applying analytical chemistry methods (HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS).
  • Ability to design, execute and troubleshoot laboratory experiments for purification and process optimization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through publications or presentations.
  • Eligible for Interim Secret clearance with potential TS/SCI clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize downstream processes for recovery and purification of microbially produced small molecules and metabolites.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve process performance and characterize biomanufacturing products using analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop biotechnology solutions for national security applications.
  • Lead technical efforts on funded research projects, including project planning, execution and communication of results.
  • Contribute to growth by developing new concepts, writing proposals, and building sponsor relationships.
