Job summary

Wallis Annenberg PetSpace in Playa Vista, CA, seeks an Animal Behavior & Training Lead to support dogs throughout intake, acclimation, and adoption, and provide post-adoption support.

You will lead professional dog training, behavior assessment, and modification, coach staff, oversee dog-to-dog introductions, and collaborate with the Animal Operations team to maintain humane, evidence-based practices.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional dog training experience; shelter, rescue, or animal welfare experience strongly preferred.
• Professional certification in dog training or behavior required.
• Experience working with dogs displaying fear, anxiety, reactivity, frustration, overarousal, and other behavior challenges preferred.
• Experience leading dog-to-dog introductions and playgroups preferred.
• Experience training and coaching others in animal handling, training, and behavior modification techniques preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and exemplary driving record.

Responsibilities

• Lead and provide Animal Care staff training on canine body language, handling, enrichment, training techniques, behavior modification, and safety.
• Support PetSpace's handler color-level program and assess handler skills.
• Provide clear, consistent instruction regarding dogs' training plans, handling needs, equipment, and safety considerations.
• Model appropriate handling, training, and behavior modification techniques for staff, volunteers, and adopters.
• Coach staff in recognizing changes in canine behavior and making appropriate handling decisions.
• Assist in developing and maintaining training protocols, procedures, assessment tools, and educational materials.
