Job summary

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is seeking a hands-on Dog Behavior Trainer to advance the health, safety, and adoptability of dogs with behavioral challenges.

You will train, socialize, provide enrichment, assess behavior, and modify plans using humane, science-based methods. This role partners with volunteers to create a welcoming, inclusive environment and supports rescue operations with flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with dogs in a professional setting.
• Reading canine body language and stress signals; basic training principles.
• Commitment to humane, evidence-based training methods.
• Ability to handle large, strong dogs safely.
• Uphold high safety standards and work well in a team.
• Flexibility/adaptability to evolving program needs.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle and train dogs of all breeds, sizes, and behavior profiles.
• Conduct daily playgroups and design enrichment activities.
• Develop and execute individualized training and behavior modification plans.
• Lead behavior consults, adopter meet‑and‑greets, and dog‑dog introductions for safe placements.
• Perform behavioral assessments and maintain up‑to‑date notes in shelter systems.
• Mentor staff and volunteers to build shelter-wide behavioral literacy.
