Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of water distribution experience required.
  • Class '3' Water Distribution Certification required.
  • Preferred Traffic Control and Safety, Trenching/Excavation, Confined Space certifications.
  • Must obtain Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within established timeframes.

  • Repair and maintain water mains; install service lines; fix pipe breaks.
  • Perform routine hydrant maintenance and pressure/flow tests.
  • Lead crew performance, equipment usage, and safety practices.

Job description

This position is responsible for job site logistics and operations, traffic controls, supervision, record keeping, and assigns individual tasks at job site. Performs lead work in: maintaining and repairing water and reuse mains and associated meters, and cross connection control devices; and other utility projects. Works under general supervision.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

  • Supervises and participates in the work of utilities crews engaged in the repair, rework, and maintenance of the water and reuse infrastructure.
  • Performs repair and maintenance on water mains, installs water service lines/mains; and repairs pipe breaks.
  • Performs routine maintenance on fire hydrants per AWWA and City standards.
  • Flushes hydrants, exercises valves; performs pressure and flow tests of fire hydrants.
  • Fuels generators and troubleshoots meters.
  • Installs and changes out water and reuse meters as well as cross connection devices.
  • Leads crew in job performance, equipment usage and safety practices.
  • Operates various heavy and light equipment; backhoes, crane truck, dump trucks, etc.
  • Responsible for job site logistics and operations, traffic controls, record keeping, and individual task assignments at job site.
  • Implements and enforces City personnel policies, departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains telephone service/communications and may be placed on emergency call outs. May be required to work rotating shift and extended hours in emergency situations.
  • This position requires applicant to be placed on a rotating on call roster.
  • May oversee contractors including inspections, scheduling, and monitoring time as well as contract requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) year experience in water distribution plus experience in construction and maintenance of underground utilities.
  • Class “3” Water Distribution Certification.
  • Prefer certified in Traffic Control and Safety in the work area.
  • Prefer certified in Trenching and Excavation.
  • Prefer certified in Confined Space.
  • Obtain a commercial learners permit for Class \"B\" Commercial Florida Driver’s License with air brake and tankerendorsements within 90 days from date of employment.
  • Obtain a Class \"B\" Commercial Florida Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements within 180 days from date of employment.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100 and IS700 within six (6) months from date of employment.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.

In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Physical Demands
  • Continual light work and occasional heavy work.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, and bending.
  • Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Good eyesight, hearing, and speech.
  • Regular driving of vehicle.
  • Must be able to wear personal protection equipment (PPE).
Work Environment

Works outside in sometimes adverse environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, and rain) for moderate periods of time. Exposure to construction and water/wastewater site hazards, traffic, and moving machinery. Involves working with high voltage equipment, heights, and below ground level conditions.
