Summary:

The Dental Assistant will provide assistance to the residents, faculty, and students in the treatment of dental patients within the Department of Orthodontics in the School of Dentistry. Primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Assisting with various routine and complex orthodontic dental procedures.
  2. Preparing chairs for procedures.
  3. Welcoming and seating patients into the chair.
  4. Performing 4-handed dentistry during procedures.
  5. Maintaining and disinfecting chairs between and after patient visits.
  6. Monitoring emergency drug and oxygen supplies during medical emergencies.
  7. Taking x-rays using digital imaging and uploading x-rays and other patient-related data into Axium.
  8. Pouring and trimming dental impressions.
  9. Ordering and maintaining supplies.
  10. Troubleshooting dental equipment and instruments.
  11. Maintaining logs for equipment maintenance and safety required by the University, School, and Department for Infection Control.
  12. Assisting with the sterilization process.
  13. Filling in at the front desk when needed, including greeting and checking patients into the clinic, scheduling and confirming appointments, creating and maintaining patient files, tracking and maintaining patient flow within the practice, answering phones, screening calls, taking messages, and answering questions of a non-complex nature.

Required Education & Experience:

At least 1 year of experience as a Dental Assistant, including experience with orthodontic procedures. Dental Assisting training and certificate from an accredited school. Dental Radiology Certification from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CPR Certification. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  1. Ability to obtain PA Child Abuse Clearances.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of standard and complex procedures performed in the clinic's area of specialty.
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide chair-side assistance.
  4. Ability to utilize dental instruments, sterilizer, operatory equipment, infection control equipment, dental x-ray equipment, and all other standard dental equipment and instruments.
  5. Must be able to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, patients, and other external contacts.
  6. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and diagnosis.
  8. Demonstrated ability to prioritize projects and tasks and to respond to multiple requests.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work with potential pathogens during dental assisting and sterilization procedures.
  10. Ability to provide dental assisting within the legal and ethical boundaries set forth by the state.
  11. Demonstrate lifelong learning.
  12. Demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail.
  13. Ability to adapt and persevere during times of change in circumstances.
  14. Demonstrate a personal commitment to providing strong customer service.
  15. Ability to transport/assist patients in wheelchairs into operatories and departures as needed.

Please note that this position will work on-site and requires a background check and Child Abuse Certifications prior to the commencement of service.
