Job summary

Flagship Pioneering in Cambridge, MA is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to modernize data infrastructure, platforms, and pipelines. You will guide data platform implementations and set standards across Infrastructure & Operations, Lab IT, PI Tech, and bioinformatics teams.

This senior individual-contributor role emphasizes leadership, scalable data systems, and applying generative AI to accelerate development, reliability, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of hands-on data engineering experience in life sciences/healthcare.
• Designing and operating cloud-native AWS data architectures.
• Advanced Python and SQL for pipelines and automation.
• Experience with Dagster, dbt, Spark, Iceberg, Lake Formation, Athena, Glue.
• Git, CI/CD, CDK, containerized workloads (Docker) and ECS.
• Experience with structured and unstructured data (CSV, JSON, Parquet, imaging).
• Proven track record leading cross-functional technical projects.
• Practical use of generative AI tools to speed development.
• Ability to lead complex initiatives with accountability.

Responsibilities

• Act as technical lead on complex data engineering projects with interdependent systems.
• Lead data infrastructure, platforms, tools, and data products.
• Ensure reliability of data storage solutions (lakehouses, marts, warehouses).
• Build backend and data integration pipelines for data lakes and marts.
• Set engineering standards for testing, documentation, release management, and monitoring.
• Lead platform observability, resilience, capacity, and performance initiatives.
• Diagnose and resolve complex failures; lead incident reviews and fixes.
