Job summary

Michigan Medicine seeks a Data Architect Lead (Data Scientist) to drive design of the Heart Failure Registry data infrastructure. You will model data, build scalable pipelines, and apply analytics to improve population health across Michigan.

Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related field or equivalent professional experience.
• 5-8 years experience in managing data from complex relational databases, preferably within healthcare.
• Proven expertise in extracting, transforming, and harmonizing EHR data using FHIR standards and interoperability protocols.
• Familiarity with healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR, ICD/LOINC codes, REDCap, Epic/Clarity preferred).
• Knowledge of HIPAA, security, and regulatory requirements.
• Experience with Git-based version control workflows.
• Familiarity with Linux-based server environments.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize work effectively, and make sound technical decisions.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills bridging stakeholders.
• Balance long-term architectural thinking with delivery-focused execution.

Responsibilities

• Designs and leads development of the data model and infrastructure, with a focus on scalable, secure, and interoperable solutions.
• Designs advanced workflows for extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) clinical data utilizing FHIR protocols to capture core clinical variables across heterogeneous EHR systems.
• Ensures seamless integration of new data sources with existing warehouse structures and optimizes data pipelines for high performance and functionality.
• Establishes rigorous processes for data acquisition, validation, integration, and storage from multiple sites, ensuring data harmonization across varied clinical systems.
• Applies sophisticated machine learning and predictive analytics methods to generate actionable insights and support population health management.
• Plan, conduct and supervise assignments involving multiple or one project.
• Review progress and evaluate results. Schedule and supervise project work. Evaluate progress and results and recommend changes in procedures as needed.
• Exercise authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
