Job summary

Windham Central Supervisory Union Townshend Elementary School is seeking a Lead Custodian to maintain a safe, clean campus and support school operations in Townshend, Vermont. Immediate start; non-exempt, with potential evening or day shifts.

Reports to the Director of Operations or Facility Manager. Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent and prior custodial/maintenance experience; familiarity with floor care, minor repairs, and safety protocols is preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Lead Custodian

REPORTS TO : Director of Operation or Facility Manager

APPROVED BY : Superintendent of Schools

FLSA STATUS : Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVES : To clean and perform routine maintenance of district buildings to provide a safe learning environment for students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintain positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance problems. Handle minor repairs directly. Includes carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.
  • Clean floors: vacuum, sweep, dust mop, wash, strip, wax and buff.
  • Wash and clean windows, walls, chalkboards, trashcans, water fountains, and sinks.
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, and wood work.
  • Install and maintain bulletin boards and displays, and repair boards, artwork, frames, and displays.
  • Provide set-up and break-down of cafeteria, gymnasium, auditorium, or other spaces for special events.
  • Empty trash receptacles and pick up litter in and around buildings.
  • Manage recycling and composting programs.
  • Clean and stock bathrooms, change and clean shower curtains.
  • Repair/replace ceiling tiles.
  • Clean windows; clean and repair window coverings.
  • Repair or replace plumbing fixtures.
  • Replace light bulbs and change clocks.
  • Move furniture.
  • Do routine maintenance of electrical, heating and ventilating vents and fixtures (i.e. changing filters and the like), locks (i.e. oiling) and lockers.
  • Open buildings at designated time; close buildings at designated time.
  • Remove snow from immediate walks and exits.
  • Monitor buildings and grounds to ensure standards for cleanliness and safety are maintained.
  • Provide coverage or service for custodial absences as requested, to include throughout the district as needed.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Reports known safety hazards in the school to the Facility Manager or Director of Operations.
  • Available to support students and staff during evacuation drills and emergencies.
  • Participate as a member of the school safety team as requested: Activate alarm during drills; help inspect the buildings to ensure everyone has evacuated and alerts principal of such; perform school safety inspections as part of a team; attend informational meetings.
  • May be assigned to an evening or day shift depending upon the needs of the employer.
  • Ensures proper stock of cleaning supplies
  • Acts as Facility Manager in the absence of the Facility Manager.
  • Works with Facility Manager to schedule vendors and evening staff duties and areas of responsibility
  • Work directly with Building Administrator, Facility Manager and Director of Operations to plan for future repairs
  • Receives all shipments and orders to ensure accuracy of deliverables.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to, received administrative supervision from, and is evaluated by the Director of Operations or Facility Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : May train or assist co-workers, but generally works along with those persons.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following:

  • Education and Experience . High school degree, or equivalent, plus 1 to 2 years of relevant experience preferred, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Commercial clean experience preferred. Experience waxing and stripping floors, using a scrubber, floor buffer, commercial vacuum and other floor machines also preferred, as well as knowledge and skills related to routine housekeeping and maintenance work.
  • Language Skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization, and with vendors.
  • Math Skills . Basic mathematical skills including ability to perform operations using units of weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability/Mental Requirements . Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills . Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty and staff, administrators, parents, and other school visitors. Ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively and effectively with peers, supervisors, and school administrators. Ability to effectively resolve conflicts.
