Position Summary
Working supervisor responsible for planning and assigning work for assigned custodial staff and for ensuring cleaning and maintenance of building and facilities.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Plan, review, assign, and monitor the work of assigned custodial staff.
- Train new staff members in appropriate cleaning methods, chemical use, equipment operation, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Supervise and set up furniture and equipment for classes and scheduled events.
- Maintain custodial materials and supplies; receive and distribute as needed.
- Maintain and account for custodial equipment and materials.
- Inspect building and facilities to ensure maintenance, safety, and cleanliness standards are met; report hazards and maintenance needs.
- Maintain records and prepare reports when directed.
- Perform general cleaning of classrooms, offices, conference rooms, laboratories, dining rooms, gymnasium, auditorium, locker rooms, libraries, and related areas.
- Clean restroom facilities, related fixtures, and restock supplies.
- Clean and maintain windows, walls, doors, stairs, desks, chairs, tables, blackboards, and related furniture.
- Clean, sweep, vacuum, extract, mop, strip, wax, polish, buff, and maintain floors, steps, entrances, and halls.
- Dispose of trash, biohazards, and recyclables properly.
- Sweep and clean entranceways and steps.
- Replace light bulbs as needed.
- Apply approved pesticides in place-approved traps for general pest control; monitor and service as required.
- Work safely with vehicles, equipment, cleaning fluids, chemicals, and other cleaning agents.
- Assist in snow removal from building entrances and adjacent walkways.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge And Skills
- High school diploma/GED required.
- Experience in industrial or commercial cleaning required.
- Ability to organize, lead, and review the work of custodial staff required.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in written instructions required.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports required.
- Ability to maintain confidential information obtained during the course of work required.
Preferred Knowledge And Skills
Two years’ experience in industrial or commercial cleaning preferred.
Functional Requirements
- Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods; continuous independent physical access within assigned areas (~30,000 sq ft).
- Frequent independent manipulation of loads up to 20 pounds, occasional manipulation up to 50 pounds, and occasional handling of loads up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, crouching, climbing, or otherwise positioning to access, examine, and clean objects and areas at heights up to 8 feet; intermittent ladder use up to 10 feet.
- Ongoing manipulation of cleaning equipment and machinery (broom, vacuum, buffer, scrubber, extractor, special purpose machines) when maintaining floors, steps, entrances, and halls.
- Ongoing manipulation of small objects and hand tools for extended periods to perform cleaning tasks.
- Frequent use of computer systems to receive and respond to emails.
- Continuous independent assessment of assigned area for cleanliness and required action.
- Continuous independent assessment of cleaning equipment performance to identify defects.
- Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications from supervisors.
- Presentation of a positive demeanor while interacting with University employees, students, and visitors.
- Consistently professional demeanor appropriate to supervisory role at all times, even in difficult, negative, or frustrating situations such as when handling customer complaints or staff issues.
- Ongoing selective attention to assigned tasks for prolonged periods.
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
Standard hours include first, second, and third shifts. Overtime may be required. Travel within the University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
