Job summary

The University of Southern Indiana in Evansville is seeking a Custodial Worker, Housing to maintain cleanliness and safety in student housing facilities. You will clean lobbies, offices, restrooms, dining areas, dorms, labs, and common spaces, perform floor care, restock supplies, and assist with setup for classes and events.

Standard shifts vary across day parts with some overtime; applicants should be able to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance and work with a diverse community.

Division: Finance and Administration

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: Grade 5: $13.63/hour

Position Summary

Perform a full range of custodial duties related to the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and facilities; perform related work as required.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Perform general cleaning of lobbies, offices, conference rooms, public restrooms, floors, dining room floors and casual seating in dining areas, common areas in dorms and apartments, computer labs, multi‑purpose rooms in dorms, stairwells in dorms and apartments, laundry rooms (floors and trash), study areas, cleaning apartments upon request, cleaning entrance ways to dorms and apartment buildings including glass, cleaning housing buildings, community center/laundromat, residential life, religious life building/laundromat, Willard conference room, maintenance restrooms and all duties as assigned.
  • Clean related fixtures and restock supplies.
  • Perform general cleaning of windows, walls, doors, stairs, desks, chairs, tables, blackboards, and related furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean, sweep, vacuum, extract, mop, maintain floors and steps.
  • Dispose of trash, biohazards, and recyclables properly.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Setup and arrange furniture and equipment for classes and scheduled events.
  • Work safely with equipment, vehicles, cleaning fluids, chemicals, and other cleaning agents.
  • Report safety hazards, identify and report maintenance needs in assigned buildings and facilities.
  • Report observed suspicious or unusual situations or activities promptly to designated authorities.
  • Assist in snow removal from building entrances and adjacent walkways.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Must possess the ability to work independently and be self‑motivated to complete tasks within allotted timeframe.
  • Working knowledge of computers, internet, and email systems required.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals required.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial cleaning preferred.
  • Ability to read and write preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic math preferred.
  • Experience with computers, internet, and email software preferred.
Functional Requirements
  • Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods. Continuous independent physical access to departments and facilities within assigned areas averaging 30,000 square feet.
  • Frequent independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 20 pounds for extended periods. Occasional independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 50 pounds. Occasional physical manipulation of loads up to 100 pounds with assistance of a co‑worker.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, crouching, climbing or otherwise positioning oneself to access, examine, and clean objects and areas in various configurations and at various heights, ranging from ground level to eight feet high. Intermittent use of a ladder to reach heights up to ten feet.
  • Ongoing independent physical manipulation of cleaning equipment and machinery—including broom and floor care machines such as vacuum, buffer, scrubber, extractor, and special‑purpose machines—when maintaining floors, steps, entrances, and halls.
  • Ability to learn cleaning methods and understand policies.
  • Ongoing manipulation of small objects and hand tools for extended periods to perform cleaning tasks.
  • Frequent use of computer systems to receive and respond to emails.
  • Continuous independent assessment of assigned area to evaluate for cleanness and necessary action.
  • Continuous independent assessment of cleaning equipment performance to identify defects.
  • Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications provided by supervisors.
  • Ongoing presentation of a positive demeanor while interacting and cooperating with University employees, students, and visitors.
  • Ongoing selective attention to assigned tasks for prolonged periods.
Regular Work Hours / Travel Requirements

Standard hours include first, second and third shifts. Overtime may be required. Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
