Job description

Position Title: Lead Controls Engineer
Estimated Total Compensation: $115,000-$140,000
This is an on-site position in Grand Rapids, MI. Axis does not currently offer remote positions or relocation packages.

Our team has decades of automation experience, spanning hundreds of projects and thousands of automation configurations.

Position Description: Lead Controls Engineers work with other Controls Engineers, Project Managers, Mechanical Engineers, Builders, Technicians and other personnel to quote, design, implement and document control systems for various types of automation and robotic equipment. You will be personally involved with system design, simulation, machine programming, debug, and validation / buyoff as well as leading a team of engineers to do the same.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop well-crafted code to provide automated machinery that meets or exceeds customer efficiency demands.
  • Develop electrical and pneumatic system designs of automated work cells.
  • Lead Controls design and simulation presentations with internal team, customers and suppliers.
  • Provide real-time debug and runoff support for automated machinery at Axis Automation as well as customer facilities.
  • Interpret customer specifications and communicate effectively to produce machinery that meets both customer and Axis Automation specifications.
  • Ensure equipment meets industry safety guidelines.
  • Support build and electrical teams.
  • Take project assignment and direction from Controls Engineering Manager.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Lead assigned projects and direct project teams as well as monitor Controls timelines.
  • Lead both small and large teams on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to train and teach less experienced Controls Engineers and Co-Ops / Interns.
  • Create and improve standards and procedures for the Controls department.
  • Communicate with vendors to specify and source major purchased components.
  • Professional management of customer relationships and requests.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related engineering field strongly preferred
  • 6+ years’ experience in a Controls / automation focused role
  • Willing to travel domestically approximately 10%-20%
  • Programming experience with PLC, HMI, Robot (pendant and simulation programming), Motion Control, and Vision Systems
  • Design experience with electrical and pneumatic systems
  • Preferred software experience: RSLogix5000/500, Studio5000, TIA Portal, FactoryTalk, Ignition, ProView, AutoCAD Electrical, Robot Studio, Roboguide, Motosim, Keyence, and Cognex softwares.
