Job summary

Surveying And Mapping, LLC (SAM) in Nashville, TN is seeking an experienced land survey crew chief to lead field operations across boundary, topographic, and construction layout projects. You will plan data acquisition, read plans, and coordinate with project managers and clients to ensure timely, accurate surveys.

The role requires 5+ years of relevant experience, proficiency with Trimble gear, robust math and software skills, and the ability to travel 80–90% of the year.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of industry experience; prior crew chief experience preferred
• Understanding of civil construction layout for multi-story commercial/industrial projects
• Experience operating Trimble equipment and robotic total stations
• Proficient with GNSS receivers, data radios/modems, 3D laser scanners, levels
• Strong computer, technical, and mathematical skills
• Excellent communication skills (listening, writing, verbal)
• Proven work history, strong work ethic, team-oriented
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet MVR standards
• Able to work outdoors year-round in all weather; capable of carrying up to 80 lbs
• Extensive regional travel 80-90% of year (1-2 week trips)

Responsibilities

• Supervise a land survey crew for daily field operations across boundary, topographic, and construction layout surveys
• Plan data acquisition strategies for field surveys from primary control to as-built surveys
• Read and interpret construction drawings and project specifications
• Communicate daily with project managers, engineers, and technicians on schedules and progress
• Interact professionally with clients and landowners
• Ensure safety procedures and company policies are followed
• Collect, interpret, and document survey data; maintain field notes and sketches
• Prepare daily reports and field paperwork
• Maintain survey vehicles and field equipment
• Travel regionally to support projects as required
