Job summary

John Grace Restoration and Construction is expanding its Lansing presence and seeks a Lead Carpenter to own restoration work on local residential projects. The candidate will supervise 2–4 crew members, ensure high craftsmanship, and maintain safety on-site.

The role requires 6–8+ years of carpentry, 2–3 years of leadership, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Training is conducted at the Comstock Park location as needed, with typical 40–45 hour weeks and occasional overtime.

Qualifications

• 6–8+ years of verifiable carpentry experience in a construction environment.
• 2–3 years of team leadership in a construction setting.
• Ability to work under high-stress conditions and adapt to daily changes.
• Strong time management, delegation, and multitasking skills.
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate strong knowledge of construction and site safety.
• Lead framing, trim, cabinets, doors, windows, and exterior finishes.
• Oversee 2–4 staff and set clear performance expectations.
• Maintain a clean, safe work environment and manage on-site conduct.
• Communicate effectively with homeowners and project manager.
• Support carpenter development and skill growth on the team.

We're expanding our reach and we're looking for a Lead Carpenter in the Lansing area. Training will be out of our Comstock Park location.

Purpose of the Lead Carpenter Role:

As a Lead Carpenter you are taking ownership of helping to restore homes for the communities of people we serve. You must provide excellent craftsmanship and outstanding communication to help us achieve our purpose of restoring lives.

We are looking for someone who:

• Has 6-8+ years of on-job experience in a verifiable construction role.
• Has 2-3 years of team leadership in a construction environment.
• Can function in a high stress environment that can change daily.
• Has excellent time management, delegation, and multi-tasking skills.
• Is self-motivated and can work independently and as a team.
• Can provide constructive feedback to team members and is open to receiving feedback to help them grow and learn.

Key responsibilities and duties:

• Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of construction and job site safety.
• Skilled at framing, trim/cabinets/door, windows, exterior finishes, finished carpentry etc.
• Highly skilled in framing and finished carpentry preferred.
• Work on jobsites daily and always maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Drive company vehicle to jobsites- follow all traffic laws.
• Communicate technical knowledge and expectations in a professional/effective manner to homeowners who may be unfamiliar with construction terminology and process.
• Communicate with Project Manager daily to ensure projects are on track.
• Oversee 2-4 staff – ensure high quality of work and set clear expectations.
• Work to develop carpenters and other team members.
• Work week is typically 40-45 hours a week, not expected to exceed 50 hours during busy times.

Requirements:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is a very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing. The employee must have the ability to lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.
• Candidate for employment must have a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record.
• Candidate must pass a criminal background check to perform work on insurance related claims.
• Basic knowledge of smartphone/email technology.
