Job summary

The City of New York, Department of Investigation, seeks an experienced Investigator for its Background Investigation Unit (BIU) to conduct sensitive investigations of individuals under consideration for City appointments to positions of public trust. You will analyze information from financial records, criminal history, and open sources to support hiring decisions.

Qualifications

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in investigation, auditing, law enforcement, security, inspections, or related fields.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Education and/or experience equivalent to the two above.

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive investigations of individuals under consideration for City appointments to positions of public trust.
Analyze and authenticate information from diverse sources, including financial records, criminal history, employment records, and education credentials.
Prepare clear, unbiased investigative reports to support City agencies in hiring and promotion decisions.
Manage a large caseload with time-sensitive goals within a team-driven environment.
Serve as a resource for junior investigators and apply critical thinking to resolve discrepancies.
