Job summary

The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) seeks an entry-level Investigator for the Background Investigation Unit to assess candidates for City appointments of public trust, conduct sensitive inquiries, and prepare unbiased reports.

Candidates will be fingerprinted, undergo a background check, and may have their consumer credit history reviewed where permitted. New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment; DOI is an equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • Four-year high school diploma or equivalent with four years of satisfactory full-time investigation experience.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive, sensitive investigations of individuals under consideration for City appointments to positions of public trust.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and authenticate information from the employee and diverse sources, including records and open-source data.
  • Prepare clear, unbiased investigative reports to support City agencies in hiring decisions.
  • Manage and complete a large caseload with time-sensitive goals in a team-driven environment.
  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve discrepancies and provide accurate findings.
