Job summary

PayPal in San Jose is seeking a project- and system-leading engineer to coordinate a team of engineers, define technical tasks, and improve backend architectures across services.

You will design scalable cloud-native services using Python (Django or Flask), implement secure, fault-tolerant systems, and mentor peers while aligning with product and platform goals. This role operates in a balanced hybrid work model with opportunities for growth and impact across payments and fintech domains.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Strong background in backend system design and cloud-native architectures.

Responsibilities

• Act as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system.
• Determine the technical tasks that other engineers will follow.
• Improve existing structures and processes, balancing time, quality, complexity and risk.
• Collaborate with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor.
• Represent PayPal externally to partners, customers, or industry organizations.
• Lead the design and architecture of scalable, cloud-native backend systems.
