Job summary

National Geographic Society seeks a Lead Archivist to plan and execute archival assessment/processing with community participation. You will lead a four-person team, survey and describe multi-format collections, and apply community-informed restrictions.

The role requires coordinating with Special Collections and digitization workflows. The position is based at Base Camp in Washington, D.C., with Lanham, MD travel and occasional remote work.

Qualifications

• Experienced processing archivist with demonstrated management ability.
• Familiar with archival, museum, and library cataloging systems and discovery interfaces.
• Knowledgeable about archival descriptive standards like DACS.
• Experience processing text-based records, photographs and AV material.

Responsibilities

• Plan archival assessment and processing strategy with communities.
• Lead a four-person processing team in surveys and description of collections.
• Catalog collections using Axiell and apply restrictions.
• Prepare items for digitization respecting source community wishes.
• Participate in in-person and remote collection consultations.
