Job mission

The Lead Applications Engineer (LAE) provides leadership and has direct oversight to the Application Engineers. The LAE also acts as an individual contributor for technical support, applications assistance, and training within the Vacuum Conveying (VC) product line in support of Piab’s sales strategies and objectives. The LAE works very closely with Piab’s Area Sales Managers, end-users, and channel partners through the entire sales process: pre-sale (quotations & technical support), order processing and post-sale support (start-up, troubleshooting, etc).

This is a customer-facing role, and the LAE is responsible for creating a positive customer experience while building and leading a team of AEs that do the same.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead: Lead by example and create a healthy environment where engineering is not silo’d and where AEs and ASMs function in partnership as a cohesive team. Inspire, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and results-oriented culture that encourages professional growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Strategic Vision: Demonstrate the ability to align the Application Engineering team’s goals with Piab’s overall business strategy and in alignment with the Commercial Director.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide expert technical leadership and direction on engineering projects, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and compliance with Piab’s processes and customer requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build strong relationships with Sales, Product Management, R&D and Customer Support to ensure seamless project delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Change Management: Lead the team through organizational and technological changes, promoting adaptability and resilience while maintaining high morale and productivity.
  • Customer Focus: Champion a customer-centric mindset, ensuring the team delivers innovative solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations and strengthen Piab’s reputation as a trusted partner.
  • Decision-Making: Exhibit sound judgment and decisiveness in prioritizing tasks, allocating resources, and resolving conflicts, balancing short-term needs with long-term objectives.
  • Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into actionable business insights.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement by implementing best practices, encouraging feedback, and leveraging lessons learned to optimize team performance and design;
  • Design conveyer solutions ensuring they are manufacturable, integratable, cost-effective, and meet customer requirements
  • Develop quotations, including all system component information, accessories, technical data, and CAD drawings & deliver to customers in a timely manner
  • Track quotes and provide follow-up to support opportunity win/closure
Lab
  • Collect all pre-lab test information required to run a test
  • Schedule lab tests according to set process, informing all stakeholders (end-user, channel partner, ASM, Commercial Director, AE Team)
  • Conduct lab tests and product trials to properly identify and validate system design recommendations, documenting all results and communicating those results to stakeholders
Training & Subject Matter Expert
  • Be a subject matter expert across the VC product portfolio, including with IB and new VC acquisitions
  • Assist the Senior Engineer in the organization, presentation and delivery of product trainings
  • Collaborate with the sales team to create sales support tools as needed
  • Deliver trainings to internal and external stakeholders
Applications Support
  • Ensure all AEs are functioning as an equal partner to the ASMs
  • Resolve engineering and customer issues that are escalated
  • Provide technical and application support for end-customers, channel partners, and internal Piab stakeholders
  • Input and edit customer orders
  • Enter CIR requests and collaborate with the Senior Engineer to ensure that entry is in accordance to established process
  • Provide shipping updates and other information requested related to order status, stock status and expediting orders, CIR status
  • Use Salesforce and additional software tools to document activity
  • Collect competitive and market intel to support marketing
  • ISO Compliance
  • Other duties may be assigned on an “as need” basis
Field & Tradeshow Support
  • Assist in the setup and break down of tradeshow booth/equipment and participate in the tradeshow as an exhibitor
  • Provide field assistance as needed to perform on-site assessments & troubleshooting, deliver training and assist with start-ups
VC telephone call group and VC email inbox
  • Proactively monitor both and delegate to AE team or reassign to other disciplines and divisions as needed
Provide best-in-class technical support to the customer
  • Go beyond your accountabilities and do what it takes
  • Always understand the customer’s view
  • Always respond to a customer even if you don’t have an answer
  • Provide a positive customer experience
  • Ensure the AE team is focused on Piab objectives while keeping the customer at the heart of what they do
  • In this role you are required to act accordingly to the Piab Code of Conduct and know and follow the Piab values, mission, and routines. This role also requires occasional travel to Piab end customers in support of the VC product line.
Key interfaces

The Lead Applications engineer (LAE) Vacuum conveying (VC) reports to the Commercial Director, North America & South America (Central) and is part of the VC Applications engineering team. The LAE will work closely with the complete North American VC team including sales, operations, procurement, logistics and finance.

Skills and abilities
  • Excellent English skills: verbal and written
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.
  • General understanding of pneumatics and pneumatic systems
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills
  • Able to work as part of a team, but also independently
  • Able to be creative in problem solving situations
  • Customer-centric with strong communication skills
  • Experience with online webinar and conference tools (Teams, GoToMeeting, etc)
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM is a plus

Experience and educational background
  • 2-3 years of experience in technical applications, sales & support
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
