Job summary

Ladders is seeking a Lead Application Modernization Consultant to guide clients through modernization of complex applications, blending hands-on technical leadership with strategic delivery oversight. You will partner with engineering, architecture, and client stakeholders to assess legacy environments and define modernization paths toward cloud-based solutions.

This remote role requires 7+ years in software engineering (3+ in modernization/leadership), proficiency in Java, .NET, or Python, and

Job description

For our client, we are seeking a Lead Application Modernization Consultant to join the team of a leader in the Information Technology space.

This role focuses on guiding clients through the modernization of complex applications, blending hands‑on technical leadership with strategic delivery oversight. You will partner closely with engineering, architecture, and client stakeholders to assess legacy environments, define modernization paths, and drive execution toward scalable, cloud‑based solutions. The position calls for someone who can balance deep technical contribution with team leadership, helping clients reduce risk while improving quality, reliability, and developer experience.

Location: Remote

Compensation: $125,000 – $168,000 annually

Responsibilities

• Lead an agile delivery team, ensuring technical outcomes and developer experience meet client needs
• Identify and mitigate risks related to legacy dependencies and new technologies
• Engage hands‑on in architecture, design, and development while overseeing multiple work packages
• Drive application modernization by assessing legacy codebases and recommending appropriate strategies
• Develop clear assessments and designs for transitioning clients from legacy to modern solutions
• Facilitate discovery and planning activities to define client problem statements and success criteria
• Champion documentation of requirements and architectural decisions to ensure clarity and accountability

Qualifications

• 7+ years in software engineering or application development, with 3+ years in application modernization or technical leadership
• Experience leading modernization of complex, high‑availability applications, including cloud‑native architectures
• Proficiency in a mainstream programming language (Java, .NET, or Python) with legacy code analysis skills
• Experience assessing legacy applications and recommending modernization strategies
• Strong background in designing distributed systems on cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
• Experience establishing engineering standards and quality practices
• Demonstrated ability to manage technical and delivery risks throughout the software development lifecycle
