Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s AI for Autonomy Lab in the SEI’s AI Division seeks a Senior Autonomous Systems Research Scientist. The role focuses on creating research agendas and leading research supporting critical U.S. government needs in AI-enabled autonomous systems.

Expect hands-on work across ML, robotics, and autonomy domains, plus collaboration with diverse teams. You will mentor staff, develop prototypes for government customers, and present findings at conferences and in journals,

Qualifications

  • Published track record in ML and robotics research.
  • Ability to lead research projects and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to convey complex ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on research: lead novel ML and robotics work.
  • Solution development: turn research into prototype capabilities for government customers.
  • Collaborate with researchers, developers, engineers, and government customers.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to technical norms.
  • Maintain awareness of AI-enabled autonomous systems and national security use cases.
  • Deliver technical presentations and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
