The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Laundry Machine Operator at the Buffalo VA Medical Center. The role involves washing and drying linens and personal clothing, requiring strong physical capabilities and attention to safety. Successful candidates will be evaluated on their ability to perform various tasks within the laundry process.
This position is located in the Environmental Management Service at VA Western New York Healthcare System - Buffalo VA Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. The Laundry Machine Operator is responsible for performing tasks involved in the washing and drying process of laundering linen and personal clothing.
The Laundry Machine Operator performs various tasks across different areas of the laundry process, including receiving, sorting soiled linen, weighing linen, loading and unloading washers and dryers, and moving linen within the laundry area for finishing. Major duties include, but are not limited to:
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, move carts weighing up to 750 pounds, and stand or walk consistently. The role requires bending, stooping, and wearing PPE for extended periods. Tasks include operating pallet jacks and electrical equipment, pulling laundry carts, and moving linens within the facility.
Work is performed indoors with adequate lighting, heat, and ventilation. Temperatures may vary, and exposure to industrial noise, chemicals, fumes, dust, and potential contagions from linens is possible. The role may involve exposure to sharps, cuts, scrapes, and other injuries, as well as unpleasant odors.
Applicants will be evaluated based on the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. The selection process involves matching your skills and experience to the required job elements, including Dexterity and Safety, Interpretation of Instructions, Operation of Equipment, Independence, and Work Practices. Experience, including volunteer work, will be credited. A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week, with part-time experience credited proportionally. All experience must be documented with start and end dates, including hours per week.
