The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Minneapolis Health Care System Laundry/Textile care facility is seeking a skilled Laundry Equipment Mechanic responsible for maintaining and repairing complex laundry equipment.

Work involves diagnosing, servicing, and replacing components to ensure continuous operation and compliance with safety standards. The role includes planning and coordinating routine tasks, with a typical Monday–Friday shift from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, at a large-scale facility

Responsibilities

  • Program, adjust, troubleshoot and perform scheduled and unscheduled service of the complex laundry equipment.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on belts, pulleys, motors, pumps, gear boxes and related components.
  • Identify root causes of failures and repair to manufacturer standards.
  • Plan, schedule, organize and prioritize routine work and respond to breakdowns.

Job description

This position reports to the Electric shop within the Maintenance Division of the Facilities Management service line at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System with a physical assignment to the Laundry/Textile care facility. The laundry facility processes an average of 50k pounds of laundry per week or approximately 2.5 million pounds annually.

The laundry facility processes an average of 50k pounds of laundry per week or approximately 2.5 million pounds annually.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 10/05/2026. Preferred Experience: 1. Work in the construction or building maintenance trades. 2. Ability to work with hand tools. 3. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems 4. Worked in commercial laundry maintenance field. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Interpret Instructions - Specifications (other than blueprint reading) Materials Technical Practices Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements

Physical Requirements: Work requires standing - walking - bending - and working in awkward positions while inspecting - maintaining - or repairing commercial laundry equipment. Work requires lifting - carrying - and positioning parts such as motors - pumps - covers - and components during disassembly and reassembly. Work requires the use of hands and power tools for extended periods. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.

Working Conditions

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a commercial laundry environment exposed to heat - humidity - noise - and damp floors. Work involved proximity to moving machinery - heated surfaces - detergents - and airborne lint. Work requires the use of hand and power tools for extended periods.

Duties
  • Major duties listed but not limited to: Program - adjust - troubleshoot and perform scheduled and unscheduled service of the complex laundry equipment to include microcomputer and microprocessor controlled laundry equipment Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on belts - shackles - pulleys - shafts - gear and gear boxes - bearings - pumps - drives - motors - and/or transmissions Identify which sub-system is the root cause of the failure and repair to manufacturer standards Work on the complex systems and sub-systems in the Textile Care Processing Facility Perform diagnostics - disassembly - fabrication and replacement of some stationary parts - replacement of components - reassembly - and programing of the system Ability to select gauges and type of conductors - relays - wiring harnesses - motors - etc
