Job description

This Maintenance Mechanic position is located in the Facilities Management Service, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, assigned to the National Center for Warrior Independence. The incumbent performs the full range of maintenance, repair, alteration, and installation work on buildings, structures, fixed and mobile equipment, and utility systems supporting patient care, clinical, administrative, and support operations.

Major Duties
  • Duties may include but are not limited to: Lays out, fabricates, repairs, and installs structural and finish carpentry. Constructs and repairs partitions, walls, doors, door frames, windows, cabinets, casework, shelving, stairs, ramps, and roof and floor structures. Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains domestic water, sanitary waste, vent, storm, and low-pressure process piping systems. Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, and repairs branch-circuit wiring, lighting, receptacles, switches, panels, motors, motor controls, and low-voltage control and signal circuits. Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC and refrigeration equipment including, air handlers, exhaust and supply fans, pumps, compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated controls. Operates, inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs the emergency and standby power system, including diesel engine-generator sets, automatic transfer switches, day tanks, fuel storage and transfer systems, batteries and chargers, block heaters, cooling and exhaust systems, and paralleling and control equipment. Maintains medical gas and vacuum systems serving dental and clinical spaces, including source equipment (medical air compressors, medical-surgical vacuum pumps. Inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs fire pumps and their drivers, controllers, jockey pumps, suction and discharge piping, valves, and sensing lines supporting fire-suppression water supply. Performs preventive maintenance rounds, completes work orders in the computerized maintenance management system, maintains tools and shop areas, and responds to facility emergencies and utility failures across the campus. Work Schedule: Various tours of duty based on the needs of the service. Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD14982A Physical Requirements: Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and working in cramped or awkward positions. The incumbent regularly lifts and carries tools, materials, and equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance or material-handling equipment. Work is performed from ladders, lifts, and rooftops and requires sustained physical exertion and manual dexterity. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
