Job summary

Acerinox is seeking a Long Product Lathe Operator to manage lathe operations, roll preparation, and setup from blueprints. You will closely coordinate with the roll shop team and production schedule to meet quality and productivity goals in a safe manufacturing environment.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to learn and adapt to changing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate roll movements to and from the roll shop.
  • Load programs into lathe based on blueprints and setup information.

  • Operate overhead crane and forklift as needed.
  • Support the roll shop and mill operators when required.
  • Ensure safe and clean work area and follow safety policies.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position of the Long Product Lathe Operatoris responsible for all operating functions listed below. Operation of the lather must be understood in total with the focus of utilizing the equipment to meet all the quality and productivity goals as outlined in our quality system. All work instructions must be followed as outlined.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Communication with the Work-Roll Unit Leader, Roll Shop Supervisor, and Roll Shop Group Leader is essential to know what rolls need to be turned and set up in preparation for upcoming dimension changes and/or back up rolls for current product.
  • Must work together as a member of crew, communicating with each other in the normal course of the day's work.
  • Once the schedule rolls to be turned is determined, the roll turner will retrieve necessary rolls from inventory and stage for turning or sending to the roll shop for assembly.
  • The roll turner will be responsible to load programs into lathe based on information obtained from blueprints.
  • The roll turner will keep proper documentation (paper and computer) to track roll inventory and monthly usage.
  • Installation of the roll neck rings (inner races and tapered sleeves) will be part of the operation of opening grooves in a blank roll. This will require the use of a bearing heater that is digitally controlled.
  • Accurately use and maintain measuring devices in the range of sizes of all work rolls.
  • Coordinate roll movements to and from the roll shop.
  • Coordinate roll necessities with the forward rolling schedule
  • Miscellaneous Activities
    • Operation of overhead crane
    • Operation of forklift
    • Checking accuracy of deliveries of rolls
    • Changing out tooling and tool holders
    • Exhibit excellent housekeeping and safety behaviors
    • Assist the roll shop and/or mill operators when deemed necessary by supervision
    • Remove chip basket and clean chip conveyor
SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of a high school degree or equivalent required

PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Mobility in plant
  • While performing the duties of (this job), the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, etc.
  • The employee is frequently required to make use of their hands for technical tasks
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Visual ability with or without correction
  • Communication abilities
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
  • Follow Company safety rules
  • Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Supervisor or Manager immediately

    • Hard Hat
    • Some areas may require additional personal protective equipment such as:
      • e. Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations.
      • f.Fire Retardant clothing
      • g. Acid PPE
  • Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy
  • Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines
  • Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
