Under the direction of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter/Paramedic responds to emergency and routine alarms as part of a firefighting/emergency services team; provides on-scene direction to team members while delivering paramedic-level patient care in accordance with district protocols; provides public education and performs other related duties.
Job Responsibilities:

- Provides fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services for the community.
- Acts as a first responder to all types of emergencies.
- Provides first aid and lifesaving duties.
- Administers life support care to sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting as authorized and directed by a physician:
- Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
- Restores and stabilizes heart rhythm on pulseless, non-breathing patient, using defibrillator, or as directed by physician. Monitors cardiac patient, using electrocardiograph.
- Initiates intravenous fluids to administer medication or drugs, or to replace fluids lacking in body.
- Performs endotracheal intubation to open airways and ventilate patient.
- Administers injections of medications and drugs, following established protocols.
- Administers initial treatment at emergency scene and takes and records patient’s vital signs.
- Assists in extricating trapped victims, placing them on backboards, hoisting them to gurneys while wearing turnouts (35 lbs.) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (45 lbs.), and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center.
- Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
- May communicate with physician and other medical personnel via radio or telephone.
- Responds to all rescue calls.
- Supports and assists other fire and medical personnel as directed on medical calls.
- Operates Advanced Life Support Ambulances and various agency vehicles safely; treats and transports patients in accordance with the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District's (NLTFPD) protocols.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports.
- Ensures that equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times.
- Performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment, and the fire station.
- Performs and documents required equipment inspections as assigned.
- Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, fire prevention, and Public fire safety education.
- Engages in drills and participates in a self-directed exercise program to maintain physical fitness.
- In the event of a major fire or emergency, may be called in from off duty to work an extended period.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Current full-time career Firefighter/Paramedic or in lay-off status.
- Successful completion of Firefighter Academy.
Required Licenses and Certifications (at time of appointment):
- A valid Driver's license
- Current State of Nevada Paramedic, EMS-RN, or current National Registry Paramedic license/certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- CPR certification
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate or bachelor's degree.
- Two (2) years or more of experience as an Advanced Life Support patient care provider in Washoe County.
Working Hours:
The Firefighter Paramedic position is hourly and follows a 56-hour workweek, with occasional travel, weekend, holiday work, and attendance at meetings outside regular scheduled hours.

- Maintain physical abilities and stamina to perform job tasks, including vision, hearing, body mobility, manual dexterity, and ability to work in various conditions.
- Must not pose a direct threat to themselves, others, or public safety.
- Annual physical fitness examination as per District policy.
