Fire Chief’s Interview TBA.General summary of the roleUnder the direction of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter/Paramedic responds to emergency and routine alarms as part of a firefighting/emergency services team; provides on-scene direction to team members while delivering paramedic-level patient care in accordance with district protocols; provides public education and performs other related duties.Job Responsibilities:The following duties are typical types of duties performed by the Firefighter. These are intended as examples only and are not to be interpreted as exclusive or inclusive of the Firefighter’s duties.Provides fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services for the community.Acts as a first responder to all types of emergencies.Provides first aid and lifesaving duties.Administers life support care to sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting as authorized and directed by a physician:Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.Restores and stabilizes heart rhythm on pulseless, non-breathing patient, using defibrillator, or as directed by physician. Monitors cardiac patient, using electrocardiograph.Initiates intravenous fluids to administer medication or drugs, or to replace fluids lacking in body.Performs endotracheal intubation to open airways and ventilate patient.Administers injections of medications and drugs, following established protocols.Administers initial treatment at emergency scene and takes and records patient’s vital signs.Assists in extricating trapped victims, placing them on backboards, hoisting them to gurneys while wearing turnouts (35 lbs.) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (45 lbs.), and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center.Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.May communicate with physician and other medical personnel via radio or telephone.Responds to all rescue calls.Supports and assists other fire and medical personnel as directed on medical calls.Operates Advanced Life Support Ambulances and various agency vehicles safely; treats and transports patients in accordance with the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District’s (NLTFPD) protocols.Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports.Ensures that equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times.Performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment, and the fire station.Performs and documents required equipment inspections as assigned.Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, fire prevention, and Public fire safety education.Engages in drills and participates in a self-directed exercise program to maintain physical fitness.In the event of a major fire or emergency, may be called in from off duty to work an extended period.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation & ExperienceMinimum of 18 years of age.High school diploma or equivalent education.Current full-time career Firefighter/Paramedic or in lay-off statusSuccessful completion of Firefighter AcademyRequired Licenses and Certifications (at time of appointment):A valid Driver’s licenseCurrent State of Nevada Paramedic, EMS-RN, or current National Registry Paramedic license/certificationAdvanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificationPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificationInternational Trauma Life Support (ITLS) OR Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certificationCPR certificationNevada Firefighter I certification OR IFSAC Firefighter IDESIRED QUALIFICATIONSAssociate or bachelor’s degree.Two (2) years or more of experience as an Advanced Life Support patient care provider in Washoe County.
