The City of Bremerton is seeking a Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic to respond to emergency medical and fire calls. This role requires a high school diploma, paramedic certification, and active participation in training and community outreach programs. Salary rates above include non-shift rates, longevity, and a 2% premium for ladder truck and boat operator roles, which employees are not eligible for until a date specified by the collective bargaining agreement or assigned by the Fire Chief. The salary range also includes compensation for a paramedic with over 10 years of employment with the City.
Under the direction of a unit supervisor, responds to emergency medical calls, utilizing specialized protocols, equipment, and supplies to provide on-scene medical intervention to preserve life until transfer to medical facilities and physician care. Responds to fire and first aid calls, using specialized equipment to save lives, protect property, extinguish fires, and perform rescue operations. Maintains readiness of facilities, apparatus, equipment, and supplies. Performs non-emergency duties such as inspections, investigations, recordkeeping, and ongoing training to upgrade skills.

Emergency Response: Activates emergency communication and response procedures upon call receipt. Participates in mutual aid during major emergencies.
Drives emergency vehicles, transports patients, and operates emergency communication devices. Uses emergency protocols and equipment, such as hoses, pumps, ladders, extrication tools, and rescue devices.
Documents detailed reports and follow-up actions for emergency calls.
Non-Emergency Operations: Tests and maintains equipment; records activities; prepares pre-fire plans and maps; conducts inspections and investigations; participates in fire prevention and community outreach activities; performs routine maintenance; participates in drills and training; maintains certifications; attends departmental meetings.
High school diploma or equivalent, plus nationally registered paramedic certification. Completion of one year of full-time paid uniformed service and agency training qualifies for lateral entry. Certifications include IFSAC or Pro Board FF1 & HazMat OPS. A valid Washington State driver’s license is required, along with successful completion of related training and ongoing certification as a paramedic. All vaccinations must be current.
Salary includes non-shift pay, longevity, and premiums for specific roles, with additional benefits such as retirement contributions, paid leave, health coverage, and educational incentives. The position qualifies for exemption from FLSA minimum wage and overtime provisions. It is part of the bargaining unit and Civil Service System. Appointment is made by the Fire Chief following Civil Service rules.
