Job Description

The work involves general firefighting duties, including combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as paramedic level emergency medical care in accordance with the Snohomish County Prehospital Treatment Guidelines, Protocols and Procedures.

The primary responsibilities depend upon current assignment, but they will involve the protection of life and property through fire suppression and EMS activities. It will include emergency medical response, identification and treatment of life-threatening illness or injury performed in strict accordance with Snohomish County Protocols. The work requires performance of hazardous or stressful tasks under emergency conditions that may involve strenuous exertion under difficult circumstances. Employees in this classification are required to apply both special firefighting skills and technical paramedical skills acquired by work experience and specialized training/certification programs. A substantial amount of time is spent training, performing inspections and maintaining of stations and equipment. Field performance reviews are required.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Perform full Firefighter duties. Respond to incidents of fire, explosions or hazardous materials and mitigate the problem.
  • Respond on medic unit, engine or ladder to life-threatening illnesses or injuries and provide EMS care. Identify and treat illnesses and injuries, according to Snohomish County Protocols.
  • Operate a wide variety of fire equipment, including, but not limited to, fire engines, aerial ladders, aid units, ground ladders, hoses and nozzles. Operate a wide variety of medical equipment, including, but not limited to cardiac defibrillator/monitor, ACLS protocol medications, intravenous needles and fluids, backboards, dressings, and splints.
  • Proficiently operate mobile and desktop computers to record and care for patients.
  • Participate in drills, simulated catastrophes, classes, or other learning/training exercises.
  • Participate in public relations activities to inform citizens of EMS and suppression program goals, objectives, and attributes.
  • Perform general maintenance work on Fire Department equipment and quarters.
  • Perform related work as required.

  • Read, write and speak the English language with sufficient proficiency to communicate effectively in person, over fire radios, and through written reports.
  • Read and interpret maps, plans, and diagrams.
  • Maintain physical ability required to perform demanding tasks and to perform effectively in critical emergency situations.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

  • Currently employed as a full-time, paid, career structural firefighter for a minimum of 24 months of continuous service.
  • At least 12 concurrent months of service as a certified paramedic in the State of Washington, holding NREMT-P or NRP certification (in any state).
  • Must possess an IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter I certification.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) qualifications for the duration of employment.

All Candidates Must Have

  • Possession of, and the ability to obtain and maintain for the duration of employment, a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver License.
  • Attainment of the age of 21 years by date of hire.
  • Possession of a current CPAT.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) qualifications for the duration of employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship, a lawful permanent resident, or deferred action for childhood arrivals recipients (DACA).
  • Submission to thorough background checks, including, psychological, physical, and medical checks; an employment reference check; and verification of all applicable certifications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The work is performed under often physically demanding, stressful, and environmentally diverse conditions, and requires the ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities and demands.
  • Maintain physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and lifting; work in inclement weather conditions; may wear heavy protective equipment while working.
  • Work in emergency and firefighting situations that may involve proximity to fire, dangerous persons and animals, hazardous emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in or near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters.
  • Work shifts up to twenty-four (24) hours duration including night, weekend, holiday, and overtime hours.

  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
  • Extensive background checks will be conducted.
  • Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a City-paid pre-employment physical.
  • This job classification is represented by IAFF Local 46.
