Job Description

Essex North Shore is seeking a Large Animal Specialist to join the Facilities, Farm and Grounds Department. The Large Animal Specialist is responsible for the daily supervision of large animals, particularly cattle and other livestock, ensuring the health and wellbeing of the animals.

Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in the administration of hygienic procedures for animals
  • Working knowledge of animal behavior and cognition
  • Familiarity with large animals; equine experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with efficiency and respect
  • Effective communication skills
  • Valid Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer 1C‑2A license (required within probationary period)
  • Valid Massachusetts Pesticides license (required within probationary period)
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of computer technologies
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Satisfactory CORI, SAFIS and SORI required
  • Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources Applicator License (required within probationary period)
  • Snow removal responsibilities during inclement weather
  • Bilingual preferred
Duties
  • Performs all aspects of large animal management, including bathing, inspecting, feeding and unlicensed medication administration
  • Assists with the general operation of the farm facilities to support educational success
  • Directs student workers in the absence of the Manager of Farm and Grounds regarding roles and responsibilities
  • Manages inventory for large animals, such as supplies and feeding materials
  • Coordinates veterinary checks for animals that appear in distress or require medical attention
  • Performs other duties as required and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the Manager of Farm and Grounds
Physical Working Conditions

This position requires prolonged periods of walking and bending; must be able to lift 25 pounds at times. The position may require in‑and out‑of‑district travel.

Terms and Conditions of Employment
  • This is a 12‑month position
  • Hours may be beyond the regular school day; priority will be given to completing necessary tasks and setting hours accordingly
  • Salary and fringe benefits are established by the Superintendent‑Director in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the District and AFSCME Council 93, Local 245
