Job summary

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, seeks a licensed veterinary technician to provide comprehensive nursing care across services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's Large Animal Clinic. You will support faculty, residents, interns, and senior students in patient care, animal handling, and use of specialized diagnostic equipment.

The role requires flexibility for days, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to assist in other areas as directed by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work cooperatively within a team setting, and understand and follow directions in the workplace.
  • Receive and convey information and instructions to senior veterinary students, clinical faculty, and technical staff.
  • Recognize needs and establish priorities with care and concern for large animal patients.
  • Be able to make sound emergency decisions concerning the health and safety of both humans and animals.
  • Administer drugs and pharmaceuticals by all acceptable routes of administration to large animals.
  • Knowledge of large animal anatomy, physiology, and etiology; CPR and animal restraint methods.
  • Have considerable experience handling large farm animals.
  • Proficiency in operation, maintenance, and application of medical equipment such as IV pumps, heart monitors, centrifuges, ultrasounds, lasers, endoscopes, hoists, slings, nebulizers, and glucometers.
  • Must be able to safely move and handle 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work for long periods standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, and pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to tolerate rabies prophylaxis.

Provides basic and intensive nursing care to all patients across all services admitted for treatment in the Large Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Offers technical assistance to clinical faculty, residents, interns, and senior veterinary students concerning all aspects of patient care, animal handling, and the use of specialized diagnostic and medical equipment. May be required to work varying shifts, including days, weekends, and holidays, and to assist in other areas as directed by the supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of basic nursing skills, veterinary pharmaceuticals, and the operation of sophisticated surgical, medical, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of large animal surgical and medical procedures, anatomy, etiology, and physiology.
  • Experience working in a veterinary medical setting.
  • Experience in a large animal practice environment and ability to work well both individually and in an academic setting.
  • Experience with veterinary software such as ezyVet and Vet Radar.
Additional Information

Pay Band: 4

Overtime Status: Non‑Exempt: Eligible for overtime

Appointment Type: Restricted

Salary Information: Starting at $44,192, commensurate with experience

Hours per week: 40+
