Job summary

Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Large Animal Facility Assistant to join the Research Animal Resources team on site. The role centers on providing humane care, welfare, and support for large animal species, including pigs, sheep, dogs, cats and non-human primates, with at least 70% of effort dedicated to these animals.

Responsibilities include sanitation, feeding, cage maintenance, record-keeping and adherence to safety and regulatory policies.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • One year of laboratory animal care or related experience preferred.
  • Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift, carry or position objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks of the Animal Cage Washer as needed.
  • Clean, sanitize and sterilize cages, feeders, water bottles and rooms.
  • Provide food and water according to schedules and instructions.
  • Use aseptic technique in a biosafety cabinet.
  • Transfer animals to clean cages according to instructions.
  • Maintain records of animals, food, water and environment parameters.
  • Observe and report signs of illness or irregularities to supervisor.
  • Provide enrichment to large animals and assist with euthanasia after training.
  • Receive and process incoming animals and materials and inspect for compliance.
