Job summary

The New School is seeking a language tutor to assist students in one-on-one 30-minute sessions outside class, focusing on grammar, pronunciation, and language usage. Tutors review homework, guide presentations and assignments, and participate in cultural events as needed.

Training on tutoring administration, pedagogy, and technology is provided; tutors report to the tutoring coordinator and use STARFISH for scheduling. This is a hybrid role with remote work and on-campus presence.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in the target language with strong English communication.
• Experience tutoring in high school or other institutions is a plus.
• Interpersonal skills: patience, empathy, respect, and tolerance for diverse opinions.
• Enrollment is limited to students currently enrolled at The New School University.

Responsibilities

• Attend tutoring training sessions and review digital material.
• Perform class visits of up to 15 minutes in every language class and explain how to sign in to STARFISH; note possible extra-credit opportunities.
• Review and explain class material: grammar, vowel sounds, diphthongs, consonant combinations; review homework with students.
• Assist with oral and written language in presentations; provide corrections and feedback.
• Facilitate interactive speaking and listening exercises to build real-world conversation skills.
• Coordinate with language professors to participate in cultural class events.
• Set up STARFISH office hours per the academic calendar and observe holidays; tutoring occurs on campus.
• Submit online timesheets for payment via My-Day; notify and inform about cancellations.
• Inform tutoring coordinator if students miss sessions; tutoring is a free service.
• Log all sessions in the tutoring Excel sheet with day, time, and student name.
