Job summary

HES is seeking a Groundskeeping Associate to maintain university campuses and outdoor spaces. You will operate mowers, small machinery, and perform seasonal tasks while ensuring safety and schedule adherence.

Responsibilities include lawn care, planting, snow removal, and upkeep of sidewalks, planters, and fountains. The role requires reliability, occasional night/weekend effort, and a valid driver’s license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs Groundskeeping Duties on Property

• Operate powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, sod cutters and pruning saws
• Shovel snow from walks, driveways and parking lots and spread salt in those areas
• Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, removing thatch, trimming, edging around flower beds, walks and walls
• Seeding, including the preparation and application of erosion control blanket, application of fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, fungicide; aquatic applications, raking, watering of trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, bulbs, seeds and sod; grooming
• Mixing and spraying or spreading fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders
• Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, and other grounds features

Plantings and Flower Installation

• Prep soil uniformly for flower or groundcover installation, cultivating beds; mulch application; bed preparation using soil amendments; core aeration
• Pruning, planting, removal or replacement of shrubs, plants, and flowers; pruning of trees and replacement of trees that are planted as a replacement due to the removal of diseased or damaged trees

OTHER DUTIES:

• Snow removal: must be available nights, weekends and holidays
• Holiday light and seasonal decoration installation and removal (excluding the electrical connections, if any)
• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Driver's License REQUIRED. Must be able to pass a background and MVR check.

Education:

• High school degree preferred.

PHYSICAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Perform heavy lifting/pushing/pulling of various landscaping equipment and materials, including, but not limited to backpack blowers, large containers of mulch/plant material, various sizes of lawnmowers, etc.
• Leverage 80 lbs. of a walk behind mower over curbs
• Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Walk up to 10 miles a day, sometimes uphill and on uneven terrain, often with equipment
• Bend and kneel up to 9 hours or more a day
• Spray various pesticides/herbicides
• Work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, precipitation)
• Noise level may be loud at times and use of ear plugs may be required (e.g. outdoor conditions, backpack blowers, running mowers, weedwhackers)
