Job summary

Lewis & Clark Community College seeks a Grounds Maintenance worker to monitor and improve the exterior environment across campuses. You will execute maintenance tasks, manage turf and plant health, and assist with garden projects and sculpture upkeep. A valid driver’s license, 2+ years in landscaping, and basic computer skills are required.

Standard hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with possible evenings or weekends.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years’ experience in landscape maintenance with lawn care.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Execute landscape maintenance and improvements for all campuses.
  • Promote turf, trees and shrubs health through fertilization, watering, and pruning.
  • Identify and report safety hazards in outdoor areas.
  • Assist in researching and installation of annual gardens.
  • Support ongoing maintenance of campus sculptures.
  • Maintain and monitor equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure OSHA and campus safety compliance and proper storage of chemicals.
  • Perform other landscape and grounds-related duties as assigned.

Job description

This position monitors and improves the beauty and safety of the exterior environment of all Lewis and Clark campuses under the direction of the Campus Grounds and Manager, Horticulture and Landscaping by providing skills and horticultural expertise to landscape maintenance and improvements.

  • Execute landscape maintenance, improvements, and related duties for all Lewis and Clark campuses as directed by the Manager, Horticulture and Landscaping.
  • Promote and maintain the health and beauty of the turf, trees and shrubs through tasks involving chemical applications, weed removal, fertilization, watering, wrapping young trees, and pruning.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards in outdoor areas, including but not limited to dead tree limbs and or sidewalk trip hazards.
  • Assist in researching and installation of the annual gardens.
  • Support the ongoing maintenance of campus sculptures.
  • Maintain and monitor proper supply of horticulture equipment and tools.
  • Plant and maintain annual and perennial flowers, trees and shrubs, in compliance with approved design, including construction of retaining walls and/or planting beds.
  • Ensure safety of all building occupants and campus visitors including debris, snow, and/or ice removal as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining digital records of all plants on campus through the use of accession software.
  • Keep work vehicles, greenhouse and all growing worksite areas in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Comply with all OSHA regulations and campus safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ensure the safe and proper storage of equipment and chemicals.
  • Participate in annual holiday decoration activities.
  • Perform other landscape and grounds-related activities as assigned.
  • High school graduate/GED.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in landscape maintenance trade with lawn care experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Standard work hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, other work shifts, including evenings and weekends, are assigned by management to accommodate operational efficiency from time to time.
  • Ability to travel independently.
  • Regularly positions, maneuvers, and transports objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., utilizing assistive devices or team-lifting as appropriate. Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment physical screening, which includes demonstrating the ability to safely lift, move, or manipulate objects weighing up to 50 lb.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in various positions for extended periods.
  • Essential functions of the position involve working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of operation of small machinery and other equipment, i.e. tractor, front-end loader, bobcat, etc.,
  • Current private-commercial pesticide applicator's license or ability to renew expired license.

The College’s standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (includes a one-hour unpaid lunch). Individual position schedules may vary or be adjusted by the department manager based on operational needs. Alternate schedules are observed during the summer.
