Job summary

Geosyntec Consultants in Walnut Creek/Oakland, CA seeks a Landfill Gas (LFG) Engineer to design GCCS, evaluate LFG capture for energy uses, and perform supporting analyses across regulatory and construction activities. Responsibilities

  • Designs landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS) including well fields, pipes, condensate sumps, blowers, and flares.
  • Designs LFG capture for energy uses such as electricity, vehicle fuel, or other products.
  • Performs analyses such as slope stability, hydrologic and landfill gas modeling, seismic, and seepage.
  • Prepares permit applications, calculations, drawings, specs, and permits.
  • Ensures compliance with air emissions, gas migration, and other regulatory aspects.
  • Conducts fieldwork for investigation and construction; monitors and tunes gas systems.
  • Provides cost estimates, feasibility studies, and contract reviews for gas recovery/utilization.
  • Understands and applies local, state, and federal landfill gas regulations.
  • Assists in proposals and business development; may participate in project management and mentoring.
  • Travels to client or project sites as needed.

Landfill Gas (LFG) Engineer

In this position, you will use your engineering expertise on projects involving landfill gas collection and control system design, compost facility design and construction, including construction quality assurance, site characterization, solid waste planning, permitting, and regulatory compliance, while further developing the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops and designs landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS), including well fields, pipes, condensate sumps, blowers, and flares, to capture LFG effectively.
  • Conducts studies and designs systems to capture LFG for beneficial uses, such as generating electricity, producing vehicle fuel, or creating other marketable products.
  • Performs engineering analyses such as slope stability, hydrologic and landfill gas modeling, seismic, and seepage.
  • Prepares permit applications, design calculations, drawings, technical specifications, and permits.
  • Ensures compliance with state and local regulations for air emissions, gas migration, and other environmental aspects of landfill operations.
  • Conducts fieldwork associated with investigation, design and construction services; including monitoring the performance of gas collection and utilization systems, performing wellfield tuning, and managing other operational issues.
  • Provides engineering support for projects, including cost estimation, feasibility studies, and review of contracts for gas recovery and utilization systems.
  • Understands local, state and federal regulations related to landfill gas and solid waste.
  • Assists in the development of proposals and other business development activities.
  • May take on task‑level or project management responsibilities, along with business development and staff mentoring tasks, based on level of experience.
  • Travels to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
Education and Licensure
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, biosystems, or geotechnical engineering. (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same field. (preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration or the ability to obtain P.E. registration within 1 year. (preferred)
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • At least 5 years (7+ years preferred) of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Experience with environmental monitoring systems (landfill gas, groundwater, etc.). (required)
  • Experience with environmental permitting, including solid waste and air. (required)
  • Knowledge of solid waste facility design, LFG system design, and construction quality assurance. (required)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Regular fieldwork and overnight travel. (required)
  • Experience with modeling/design tools such as AUTOCAD, KYpipe, fate transport modeling, Slope/W, Vadose/W, Sigma/W, and ARCGIS. (preferred)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client‑driven drug and background testing may be required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
Compensation and Benefits

The typical base salary range for this position is $101,675 to $152,575 per year (Oakland, Walnut Creek). Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set, and location.
