Job summary

Scotland County seeks a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator for its landfill operations within the Solid Waste Department. The role involves operating bulldozers, compactors, loaders and related equipment to manage waste, recycle items, and support site expansion and maintenance.

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, at least 1 year of equipment experience, a valid license, and must obtain a Class B CDL within 2 years.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid driver’s license and obtain Class B CDL within 2 years of hire.
• SWANA training and certification within 2 years of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operate bulldozers, compactors, excavators, graders, loaders and trucks in landfill operations.
• Inspect waste streams for recycling ban compliance and hazardous items.
• Assist with demolition, site grading, road construction and landscaping at the landfill.
• Provide guidance to truck drivers on dumping and material segregation at the site.
• Serve as backup for scalehouse operations.

Job description

Performs responsible skilled heavy equipment operation work in the landfill operations of the County Solid Waste Department. Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as large bulldozers, compactors, excavators, motor graders, loaders, front loading collections vehicles, roll-off trucks and other equipment to collect solid waste and recyclables, clear land for landfill expansion, spread and cover landfill solid waste with dirt, grade and landscape the landfill site, haul dumpsters to disposal sites, and construct roads at the landfill or for other similar purposes.

• Operates bulldozer and compactors in clearing land and covering land at the debris; operates heavy equipment to grade and excavate land and backfill excavations and trenches; ensures proper grade, slope and coverage amount.
• Operates a front loader and roll-offs in the collection of waste debris, solid waste and recyclables dumpsters on various routes and transfer to appropriate disposal sites.
• Operates loader and grader to spread gravel on roads and parking areas; performs grading, ditching and other construction and maintenance of dirt roads and the repair of road surfaces at the landfill.
• Operates front-end loader to load materials into trucks or to push garbage into containers; operates backhoe or other equipment to compact solid waste materials in containers and bins.
• Inspects contents of waste being disposed to determine compliance with the County's recycling ban and to ensure the exclusion of hazardous waste or other prohibited items from the landfill.
• Assists with off-site demolition jobs; hauls materials from demolition job to landfill for disposal.
• Instructs truck drivers where to dump waste; observes waste being dumped at the landfill for proper materials; separates out materials not allowed; explains proper access and use of the landfill to the public.
• Performs the daily cover of the solid waste working face so that trash is not left exposed.
• Assists with cleaning up around transfer stations and collection sites.
• Performs testing of gas wells and water quality.
• Performs daily equipment inspections in accordance with landfill procedures ensuring equipment is in proper working condition.
• Participates in site landscaping, hydroseeding, and straw blowing.
• Performs ground keeping duties around the landfill site and roadways to include picking up wind-blown refuse and maintaining vehicular access to all disposal and processing areas.

• Performs related tasks as required.
• Serves as backup for scalehouse operations.

High School Diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Must obtain a Class B CDL license within two (2) years of hire.

Must complete SWANA training and receive certification within two (2) years of hire.
