Job summary

Thomas & Hutton seeks an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead field crews across the Southeast, overseeing boundary and topographic surveys and construction staking. You will operate robotic total stations, GPS, data collectors, and levels, ensuring data accuracy and timely updates. A strong math background and communication skills are essential.

Expect a Monday–Thursday schedule 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with overtime as needed, and opportunities to grow through Tom & Hutton University and

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3+ years of experience as Survey Crew Chief preferred.
• Prior experience conducting boundary and topographic surveys required.
• Experience with ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, construction staking, and Carlson SurvCE preferred.
• Working knowledge of data collectors, robotic total stations, GPS equipment, and digital levels.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Strong math skills and attention to detail.
• Experience preparing detailed field notes and sketches.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and appropriately prioritize workflow.
• Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday–Thursday 6:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., with occasional overnight travel.

Responsibilities

• Lead and direct a survey crew of two or more team members on diverse field assignments.
• Perform and oversee boundary, topographic, construction staking, and other surveys.
• Operate survey equipment including robotic total stations, GPS, data collectors, and levels.
• Ensure accuracy and quality of field data, notes, and sketches.
• Provide direction to crew to ensure efficient project execution.
• Coordinate daily with project managers and office staff to meet scope, schedule, and quality goals.
• Maintain and transport survey equipment safely and ensure proper operation in the field.
• Communicate project status and field updates regularly.

What You Bring:

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform strenuous physical activity in a wide range of temperatures and outdoor environments
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to climb hills and walk long distances across varied terrain
• Ability to traverse wooded areas, construction sites, and undeveloped land
• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds
• Ability to work in environments that may contain venomous snakes and insects such as ticks, red bugs, wasps, bees, hornets, and yellow jackets
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
