Job summary

SEH is seeking a field survey assistant to support boundary, topographic, and construction surveys in Rochester, MN. You will help with data reduction, digital terrain modeling, and the preparation of right-of-way plats and survey maps, working closely with project teams in the field.

The role requires outdoor work under varying weather, travel to project sites, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, employee-owned culture at SEH.

Qualifications

  • Overtime as project schedules require.
  • Strong communication and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to walk and climb over rough terrain and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors for 8–12 hours in varying weather conditions.
  • Travel for projects, meetings, and overnight stays as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field surveys across multiple project types.
  • Support data reduction, digital terrain modeling, and surface creation.
  • Prepare right-of-way plats, certified survey maps, boundary surveys, and other survey-related documents.
  • Assist with drafting and survey computations.
  • Collaborate with project teams while maintaining the ability to work independently in the field.
  • Travel as needed to support project demands.

Essential Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime as project schedules require
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to walk and climb over rough terrain and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors for 8–12 hours in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to travel for projects, meetings, and overnight stays as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with basic surveying procedures, including:
    • Boundary and land surveys
    • Topographic surveys
    • Construction staking methods using Total Stations and GPS
  • Experience with drafting, survey computations, and interpreting plans and easement descriptions
  • Field experience using Trimble survey equipment
  • Working knowledge of:
    • AutoCAD
    • Trimble Business Center
    • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.)

This position requires an MVR records check verifying that you possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record which meets the requirements of SEH’s Driving Program.
