O.L. Thompson Construction Co., Inc. in the Charleston area is seeking a full-time land surveyor to perform construction layout, as-built, topographic and boundary surveys.

The candidate works independently or with others, shows good math aptitude, and a commitment to safety. You must have a clean driving record, be 21+ with authorization to work in the United States, pass a background check and drug test, and be able to operate amid varying weather.

Location: Charleston Metro, Tri-County Region (Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston Counties)

Job Description

This is a full‑time position. The candidate will work independently or with other personnel to perform land surveying tasks, such as construction layout, as-built surveys, topographic surveys, and boundary surveys. This position will be offered to a self‑motivated, results oriented individual, who has the desire to learn new skills, good math aptitude and who can drive for the company. You must have a clean driving record and pass a background check.

General Requirements

• Must be 21 years or older to operate equipment or be a company driver.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Must be able to work in all types of weather and conditions which may include, rain, heat, cold, mud, dirt, dust, humidity, loud environments, and extreme temperatures. Weather may alter your work schedule.
• Must bring and wear personal protective gear daily as specified site by site which may include hard hat, glasses, safety vest, ear plugs which will be provided by the company.
• You must provide and wear our own long pants, work rated boot and at least a 4-inch sleeve or longer.
• Must be able to reliably get to and from the jobsites on time every day in the tri‑county area.
• Must be able to following verbal and written instructions in English.
• Must be able to work some evenings and weekends and overtime as needed or when required.
• Must be able to perform repetitive heavy manual labor which may include but not limited to standing for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, lifting heavy items repeatedly.
• Must be safety conscious and aware of your surroundings.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and ongoing quarterly testing.
• Some positions require background checks and clean driving records (as specified).
• All new hires will be on a 90-day probation.

Specific Requirements

• MUST BE 21 years or older to be an approved driver.
• Must have at least 5 years driving experience and a clean 10 year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).
• Must have a clean background.
• Preferred that you have experience in survey, topographical and boundary, etc.
• Knowledge and experience in Trimble Construction Data Collectors, Robotic Total Stations, & GPS systems is a plus.
• Be able to lift and carry equipment.
• Be able to drive for this position with a clean MVR.
• Aptitude in mathematical problem solving.
• Capable problem solver for intense manual labor.
• Being able to follow the directions of your supervisors is essential.
• Safety is a priority. Being aware of your surroundings and following protocols.

Typical Hours

Hours may vary but typical construction is 7:00 am-5:00 pm, required overtime possible.
