Job summary

APTIM is seeking a Survey Technician II to perform field surveying tasks in support of environmental remediation at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, California. Under the supervision of the Construction Manager, you will establish excavation boundaries, set control points, and document survey data for restoration activities.

You will work with project engineers and surveyors, prepare as-built drawings, verify data, and use AutoCAD and GIS tools.

Qualifications

  • Outdoor/field surveying experience for remediation projects.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Knowledge of survey instrumentation and data recording.
  • HAZWOPER training preferred but not required.

Job Overview

Under the supervision of the Construction Manager, the Survey Technician II will perform a variety of surveying tasks in support of environmental remediation and radiological investigation activities at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (HPNS) in San Francisco, California. The Survey Technician will collect and document survey data to establish excavation boundaries, trench unit limits, and site control points for remediation activities associated with radiologically impacted soils. Survey work will support engineering, mapping, construction, and environmental restoration activities. The technician will work closely with project engineers, construction personnel, and the Professional Land Surveyor to ensure accurate documentation of excavation areas, soil stockpiles, radiological screening yards (RSY), and restoration activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Surveying excavation boundaries for trench units associated with former sanitary sewer and storm drain systems.
  • Establishing survey control points and site benchmarks.
  • Supporting excavation and backfill operations for environmental remediation.
  • Surveying radiological screening yard (RSY) pads and soil stockpile locations.
  • Preparing as-built survey drawings documenting excavation limits and restoration areas.
  • Supporting restoration of site infrastructure including roads, utilities, and site improvements.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and descriptions of surveys in order to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.
  • Prepare charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
  • Plan and conduct ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
  • Analyzing data using plans, maps, charts, and software such as AutoCAD and GIS programs.
  • Coordinate findings with the work of engineering personnel and others concerned with projects.
  • Adjust surveying instruments in order to maintain their accuracy.
  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based GPS.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
Basic Qualifications
  • Able to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Minimum 3 year experience with previous construction and/or environmental project work preferred.
  • Requires physical strength, stamina, flexibility, and dexterity.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Preferred applicant will have current OSHA HAZWOPER training; not required, will train.
  • A resume is preferred but not required when applying.
  • Dependable transportation and cell phone service.

Compensation

Estimated pay: $30 per hour. Compensation depends on experience, education, key skills, geographic location, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
