The St. Johns River Water Management District seeks a field equipment operator at Bayard Field Station, Green Cove Springs, FL. The role supports the Bureau of Land Resources with wildland fire management, fuels work, and land management tasks.

Responsibilities include operating tractors and dozers, conducting surveys, and maintaining access and safety. Requires a high school diploma or GED and a Florida CDL with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months.

Job description

The St. Johns River Water Management District is an environmental regulatory agency whose work is focused on ensuring a long-term supply of drinking water, and to protect and restore the health of water bodies in the district’s 18 counties in northeast and east-central Florida. Job Summary : Operates and maintains land management equipment under a wide variety of conditions to provide support within the Bureau of Land Resources.

Job duties include :

• Operates and maintains fire management equipment under a wide variety of conditions to provide support within the Bureau of Land Resources; installs and maintains pre-suppression firelines ; ensures that firelines are in compliance with the applicable Silvicultural BMP's; provides dozer/plow equipment support during prescribed fire operations; assists with wildfire suppression operations.
• Operates and maintains equipment utilized in support of fuels management and restoration projects such as farm tractors with mowers, roller choppers, harrows, mulchers, Marsh Masters, etc.
• Assists with forest and land management projects including marking timber, cruising timber, site preparation, and reforestation; conducts wildlife and plant surveys, trail maintenance, and boundary maintenance projects; assists with the coordination of contractors to ensure contract specifications are followed.
• Assists with security and public recreational needs; recreational amenity upkeep, keeping public parking areas free of trash, fixing fences, ensuring gates are secure, etc.

Ability to:

Read maps and aerial photos; make sound land management decisions and recommendations; communicate well with a variety of people in all situations.

Skilled In:

The operation and maintenance of John Deere 650 bulldozers or the equivalent; the operation and maintenance of transports with air brakes including both manual and automatic transmissions; operation and maintenance of farm tractors and various tractor implements.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

Performs fieldwork under adverse environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, rough terrain, and exposure to natural hazards. Participates in prescribed burning and wildfire suppression operations; operates and transports a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, ATVs, tractors, and airboats; assists with invasive species management; and completes occasional overnight travel as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year of experience in natural resource management required.

The District will pay for the Entry-Level Driver Training program through a provider of the District’s choice leading to obtaining a CDL. The District will reimburse for ancillary costs such as those associated with the issuance of the license. After the initial Entry-Level Driver Training program paid by the District, if a CDL is not obtained, the employee will be responsible for the cost of subsequent training.

SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Drug Testing Program as described in 49 CFR Part 382. Licenses:

Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

Valid Florida Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire, or the ability to obtain the license and endorsement within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Salary Range: $40,872.00 - $51,084.80

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience
