Job summary

The Urban Electric Co. is seeking a Lamp Shade Artisan in North Charleston, SC to assemble and finish lampshades to exacting standards. You will work in a collaborative team, following patterns and using sewing tools to deliver high-quality products.

You should enjoy hands-on work, have strong attention to detail, and be able to manage time to meet production goals. Training and growth opportunities are provided on site.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required or preferred.
  • Experience in lampshade assembly, sewing or working with textiles preferred.
  • Must pay attention to details and be able to work accurately.
  • Strong time management and ability to meet production deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and blueprints.
  • Basic computer skills (email, internet, MS Office).

Responsibilities

  • Assemble fabric and paper lamp shades to exacting standards.
  • Fabricate shades following patterns using scissors, needle and thread and/or sewing machine.
  • Apply glue to edges and shade attachments (collars, ornaments, trimmings).
  • Assemble shade to frame by stringing cord and lacing around frame rings.
  • Form foundation by winding tape over frame rings for material attachment.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure quality, cost and delivery meet client expectations.
  • Perform duties safely, organized and efficiently.
  • Cross-train into other Fulfillment Center areas (glass, paint, packing).

Who You Are

As a Lamp Shade Artisan, you enjoy working with your hands and seeing a job completed to high standards. You work well within a team environment, and you are punctual. You also like to collaborate towards continuous improvement.

A Day in the Life
  • Performing any combination of tasks involved in assembly of fabric and paper lamp shades to exacting standards
  • Fabricate lamp shades following patterns and using scissors, needle and thread, and/or sewing machine to meet client specifications of quality and pattern placement
  • Applies glue to edges of shade fabric and backs of shade attachments, such as collars, ornaments and trimmings
  • Folds glued edges of fabric around wire frame and presses attachments onto fabric
  • Secures shade to frame by stringing cord through shade perforations and lacing cord around frame rings
  • Winding tape spirally over the upper and lower rings of the frame to form a foundation for attaching the material
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed to ensure quality, cost and delivery of shades meet client expectations
  • Perform all duties in a safe, organized and efficient manner
  • Will be required to cross-train into other Fulfillment Center areas including glass operations, paint mixing, painting shades and pack.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in lampshade assembly, sewing or working with textiles is preferred.
  • You enjoy solving problems. You love taking on difficult challenges and finding solutions.
  • You pay attention to the details. As far as you’re concerned, anything worth doing is worth doing right, every single time. You stay focused and nothing falls through the cracks on your watch.
  • You’ve got fine motor skills and the ability to work with small parts.
  • You can manage your time and prioritize meeting production deadlines.
  • You’re a flexible team player, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • You have technical aptitude and the ability to read and interpret shop drawings and blueprints.
  • You have basic computer skills (e-mail, internet, and Microsoft Office).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to wear PPE as required
Primary Location
  • This position will be located at our brand new, state of the art Ashley River Campus (ARC).
  • The physical address for this position will be at 4500 Leeds Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
