Job summary

HarscoEnvironmental in Newport, Rhode Island, seeks a Utility Laborer to perform general labor and industrial cleaning in a heavy mill setting, including pressure washing, lubrication, material handling, and debris removal. You will work to maintain a safe, clean, and productive environment, follow all safety procedures, and participate in continuous improvement efforts with a strong emphasis on teamwork.

This position requires a pre‑employment background check and drug screen; HS diploma

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

• Ability to work safely in a heavy industrial or steel mill environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform industrial pressure washing of heavy mobile equipment, processing plants, roadways, and designated work areas.
• Conduct routine lubrication and greasing of mobile and stationary equipment as directed.
• Shovel material accumulations, slag, dust, scrap, and debris from operating and maintenance areas.
• Hand-pick scrap metal and recover reusable materials from designated work zones.
• Remove debris, trash, and other materials to maintain safe and orderly work areas.
• Perform general housekeeping duties throughout the facility, including sweeping, cleaning, and waste disposal.
• Assist maintenance and operations personnel with routine labor tasks.
• Follow all site safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and environmental regulations.
• Conduct visual inspections of equipment and work areas and report unsafe conditions immediately.
• Utilize hand tools, shovels, brooms, pressure washers, grease equipment, and other tools safely and effectively.
• Support spill response and environmental cleanup activities as directed.
• Work safely around moving equipment, elevated temperatures, dust, noise, and other industrial hazards.
• Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

Job Description

Position Summary

The Utility Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of general labor and industrial cleaning duties in support of steel mill operations. This position assists with maintaining a safe, clean, and productive work environment through pressure washing, lubrication of equipment, material handling, scrap recovery, debris removal, shoveling, and other operational support activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, reliability, and teamwork while working in a heavy industrial environment.

Preferred

• Previous industrial, manufacturing, steel mill, construction, mining, or environmental services experience.
• Experience operating pressure washing equipment.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and lubrication experience.
• Experience performing industrial housekeeping or laborer duties.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and shovel for extended periods.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, respirator, and other safety equipment as required.
• Ability to work around dust, noise, vibration, moving equipment, and high-temperature environments.
• Heavy industrial steel mill environment.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, elevated temperatures, dust, noise, and mobile equipment traffic.
• Overtime, weekends, holidays, and shift work may be required based on operational needs.
