Overview

LaborerGrade 7Supervisor- Jeff Smith Solid Waste Superintendent

Salary: $32,302.40 ($15.53 an hr) - $34,881.60 ($16.77 hr)

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled and manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county facilities, buildings, equipment and grounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the seventh grade and some experience in performance of heavy manual work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Trims hedges, mows grassy areas, and blows leaves and grass from walkways; plants and prunes shrubbery; picks up trash and debris in parking lots.
  • Cuts trees, hauls wood and stumps.
  • Sets up, repairs, and disposes of facility equipment and furnishings; assembles equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains neatness and cleanliness of storage room; stores tools, supplies and equipment properly; checks stock of supplies and makes list accordingly.
  • Repairs and disposes of facility equipment and furnishings.
  • May assist in the unloading, storing, and feeding of process chemicals.
  • Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals and other materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Digs shallow trenches and ditches.
  • Performs various grounds maintenance duties.
  • Picks up paper and debris on public property street.
  • Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning ditches, raking, and spreading asphalt and patching holes.
  • Assists in the repair, installation and maintenance of utility lines and related facilities.
  • Serves as traffic flagger on street and utility projects.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools which may include a motor vehicle, boilers, pumps, exhaust fans, water heater, cement mixer, planer, cutting torch, power saw, skill saw, router, drill, drill press, spray gun, pick axe, shovel, mechanic tools, carpentry tools, plumbing tools, electrician tools, two-way radio, telephone, etc. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.

DATA COMPREHENSION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things which may include forms, reports, blueprints, diagrams, construction drawings, reference materials, and operational manuals.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to speak with and/or signal people to convey or exchange mechanical, electrical and construction information.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of mechanical, electrical, and construction-related documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to speak to others.

INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic mechanical, electrical and construction-related techniques; to understand departmental policies and procedures.

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow verbal and written instructions.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to visually inspect items for proper length, width, and shape using job related equipment.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using job related equipment and to operate motor vehicles.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, job related equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting motion or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

COLOR DIFFERENTIATION: Requires the ability to discern color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive nature of sounds by ear.
