Responsibilities

• Lead a crew in performing sewer maintenance tasks when supervisor is absent.
• Operate heavy equipment (Dump trucks, Backhoes, Snowplows) as needed.
• Respond to inquiries and emergencies; participate in street/sidewalk repairs and infrastructure maintenance.
• Use Cityworks or related software for data entry and work orders.
• Perform daily communications with residents and coordinate team activities.

Laborer III

(Sewer Maintenance)

An Overview

Laborer III performs tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The Laborer III class differs from Laborer I and Laborer II in that tasks require a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Laborer III’s do not require as much supervision and will lead the crew when the supervisor is absent from the work site. Labor III lays out the details of each specific assignment and constantly checks the work in process and upon completion; or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. An incumbent in this class may assist Laborers II’s and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks to maintain and repair the facilities of the stormwater and wastewater collection system.

The Opportunity

• Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer mains, hydrants, and gate valves;
• Skillfully operate Vacuum Truck, CCTV, and Jetter Truck Operators with inspecting and flushing sewers;
• Possess the skills and abilities to lead a crew in performing assigned tasks related to sewer maintenance work related tasks;
• Skillfully operate heavy equipment such as Dump trucks, Backhoes, Snowplows with spreaders, and other equipment used in the Sewer Industry;
• Responds to citizens’ inquiries regarding Public Works Services;
• Participates in the construction, repair and/or asphalt patching of streets, concrete and brick sidewalks, and curbs and gutters to restore areas to their normal condition;
• Inspect manholes to determine condition and locate blockages;
• Operate jack hammers, chain saws, cutoff saws, and other mechanized equipment needed to make repairs to water and sewer lines;
• Load trucks with de-icing materials during snow operations. Applies sand and/or brine to icy areas as directed;
• Make repairs to sewer laterals fixing leaks, blockages, or pipe collapses;
• Promote a collaborative and harmonious work environment;
• Use a computer, related software, or Cityworks asset management system to enter data for work orders, completion of work, and customer complaint documentation;
• Perform daily written and verbal team/customer interaction including responding to onsite resident inquiries;
• Respond to emergencies including call-back and mandatory overtime as needed (i.e., snow removal operations, flooding, other emergencies);
• Performs related work as required.

To qualify for this position

To qualify for this position, all candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED; at least three years of experience in performing semi-skilled/skilled maintenance or construction tasks; knowledge of turf and/or grounds maintenance; and three years’ experience as a lead worker in any related trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the require knowledge, skills, and abilities and possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License.

The Laborer III position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with the AFSCME - Labor & Trades.

This position requires the successful completion of a Background Check and DOT Drug Testing and Physical Examination.
