City of New Haven is seeking a General Maintenance/Construction Worker to perform limited skilled manual and servicing work across public works projects. The role involves physical labor, tool operation, and routine supervising checks while performing dirt moving, lawn maintenance, barricade work, and street/lot cleanups.
The position requires a valid Connecticut CDL, adherence to safety procedures, and the ability to work in all weather. Regular 40-hour weeks, 7:00 a.m.

Work involves a variety of manual labor, servicing, and equipment operation tasks in general construction and maintenance activities. The work involves physical labor and, depending on the specific assignment area, involves the operation of hand and power tools, and light to medium duty automotive equipment as necessary.
Work is usually closely supervised and the employee receives work instructions at the beginning of each new job; however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks which can be carried out without difficulty once these tasks are learned. As employees gain the experience and job knowledge, work assignments may become more difficult and varied.
Work is typically 40 hours per week, with a 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. shift.
Three months to one year of experience in maintenance, repair and construction activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Persons with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
This work is physical, manual labor, requiring agility and strength needed for the safe operation of assigned equipment. Work may be performed in all weather conditions.
This is a "General Fund," non-tested position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union.

Hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but instead will contribute 9% of pay to the City pension.
The City of New Haven does not sponsor employment visas. All applicants must have current authorization to work in the U.S. without employer-sponsored visa support.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*, and (3) a 120-day probationary period.
